LAMONT-DOHERTY EARTH OBSERVATORY OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y., is a research division of Columbia University dedicated to understanding how planet Earth works. The Observatory, established in 1949 by Columbia geology professor Maurice Ewing, is located on a 125-acre estate donated to the University by the Thomas W. Lamont family. Research in Lamont’s first two decades culminated in crucial observations confirming continental drift, seafloor spreading and plate tectonics. From the 1970’s, Lamont-Doherty scientists have spearheaded new research thrusts in global climate changes, the ocean’s role in regulating them, and many other areas of cutting-edge research. LDEO is associated with the Columbia Earth Institute, American Museum of Natural History, Goddard Institute for Space Studies, CIESIN (Center for International Earth Science Information Network), and other organizations

AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is the nation’s largest professional organization devoted to meteorology,  climatology, physical oceanography, and other atmospheric and hydrospheric interests. The AMS Education Program sponsors several programs supporting K – 12, university, and in-service education. Of special interest for classroom teachers:

DataStreme Atmosphere (distance learning course for weather education)

DataStreme Ocean (distance learning course for oceanography)

DataStreme Earth’s Climate System (distance learning course for climate change)

Project Atmophere (meteorology education at the NWS Training Center, Kansas City, MO)

Project Ocean (physical oceanography education at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD)

Many of the training programs are provided through a network of Peer Trainers and Local Implementation Teams. You can find more about these programs and contact information for AMS educators in your area on the web site.
