Rapid advances have been made in the development of digital technologies to represent our planet, and in the applications of such resources in classrooms to enhance student achievement. Dr. Andrew Goodwillie has been a leader in this field through the GeoMapApp and Virtual Ocean projects created at LDEO. In this session, he will share some of the latest progress in using these for Earth Science Education.
Joining Andrew is Steve Kluge, an award-winning NYS Earth Science teacher who has become a leader in educational applications of Google Earth and other electronic data bases. Andrew and Steve recently received a National Science Foundation Grant to create GeoMapApp classroom-ready materials directly connected with the New York State Earth Science Core Curriculum.
If possible, please bring your own laptops.

 

Cutting-Edge Research

    GeoMapApp and Virtual Ocean are free tools developed by Lamont scientists for exploring and discovering geoscience data.
They have been used by middle and high school classes as well as research scientists. Teachers can utilize these tools to teach introductory earth sciences and oceanography concepts, such as seafloor spreading, contouring, gravity, 3-D geospatial awareness and much more. Students can create short authentic research projects. In addition to drawing on the wealth of built-in data sets, users can import, view, and manipulate their own data tables.

In the workshop, we’ll provide an introduction and plenty of hands-on demonstrations. Please bring your own laptops. Materials will be provided for free.

     Dr. Goodwillie is an Associate Research Scientist in LDEO’s Division of Marine Geology & Geophysics. His research has focused on innovative tools to visualise the hidden ocean floor, and use these to help educate the next generation of scientists and students.

2) When should GeoMapApp be used for full-class instruction, and when should they be used for small groups or individual projects?

3) Describe strategies to locate suitable GeoMapApp resources for your classes.

4) Design a lesson plan that incorporates at least one GeoMapApp-based activity .
