"Living with Earthquakes"
Guest Scientist: Dr. Arthur Lerner-Lam
This lecture will focus on
earthquakes, and what we can do about them. We
will first discuss earthquakes and what we know about them. We
will describe
different earthquake phenomena and their tectonic origin, how
earthquakes
are measured, whether earthquakes can be predicted, and
whether humans can
cause earthquakes. We will then turn to the ground motions
caused by
earthquakes, and how they affect people, buildings, and large
structures
such as bridges and dams. Finally, we will turn to earthquake
response and
protection. We will discuss what to do in case of an
earthquake, and what
happens during an emergency response. We will also discuss
how earthquake
damage and loss of life can be reduced through preparedness
and mitigation.
Dr. Lerner-Lam's PowerPoint presentation is very large (31
