Suggestions for Integrating Math into Science Instruction

Averages/statistics: in any experiment you will do several trials (heart rate experiment, reflex experiment, plant height, number of bacteria colonies). You'll need to average the trials

graphing: graph experiments, make distribution graphs of student height, student weight,

Metric system/division: Microscopes use the metric system, meter, centimeter, millimeter, micrometer, in a cell measurement lab, measure the length of acell you'll need to determine the length of the feild of view, then divide by the number of cells to find the size of a cell. you'll also use estimation, division and mental math.

Ratios: give students an experiment using different reagents. They need to scale it down for a personal experiment.

measurement: graduated cylinders, student height, measuring sunflower seeds in an experiment to make a distribution graph of sunflower seed length.

Area/division: Going to do a biodiversity survey?

they'll need to determine the area of the area they'r surveying. They'll also need to determine the number of specific organisms per unit area. For organisms that live underground, they can determine the volume.

Volume: give the students the problem of having to determine lung capacity. There are different types of math depending on the process they come up with.
