“Collaborative Research: An Investigation of Gas Blowouts
offshore Virginia/North Carolina”

July 24 – 26, 2005

This special two-day workshop at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, NY, explored cutting-edge investigations about an important and intriguing problem: large crater-like depressions at the continental shelf break. First thought to be caused by landslides and pose potential tsunami threats, closer inspection revealed that they were probably produced by a more intriguing process: eruptions of methane gas from within the sediments.

Twelve classroom teachers joined Dr. Jeffrey Weissel, Dr. Marie-Helene Cormier, Dr. Michael J. Passow, and doctoral student Kori Newman for presentations about explorations with hypersensitive sonic instrumentation and sample collectors on the continental margin off Virginia and North Carolina examining evidence of large-scale fluid expulsion during gas blowouts.

The teachers and scientists then collaborated in the development of  classroom-ready curriculum units for Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Technology classes based on these discoveries and related research. During the school year, participants will test out these materials with students and provide the researchers with feedback. Then their curriculum materials will be available for wider distribution.
